A merchant vessel (MT) at 0800Z on the 4th October 2020 reported an approach by 2 small craft with 4 persons on each, in position 1412N 04953E (vicinity of point B) the two small craft approached to within 200 metres and then departed to the north.

23 April 2020 Position 12° 15.0’N 004°40.0’E MSTC – Bab al Mandeb – 55nm SW Aden

Reporting indicates that vessel has been approached whilst transiting Eastbound MSTC 55nm SW Aden. Reports indicate that the vessel was approached resulting in the embarked AST firing warning shots. The skiffs were said to have withdrawn. Further reporting indicated that a further vessel 12nm East reported a similar approach after this initial incident.

It was reported that up to 6 skiffs were sighted within the area, it remains unclear how many skiffs approached the vessels. No weapons or ladders reported at this time

UPDATE: INCIDENT

A Merchant Vessel in Posn. 1418.06N 05229.18E. (in Vicinity Point Bravo of the IRTC) at 1020utc on 3rd March was closed by 3 small craft.

1 of the craft was unmanned and approached the vessel to extreme close quarters.

The Vessel followed BMP5 procedures and all of the small craft withdrew.

The details of the incident remains under investigation.

All vessels are encouraged to exercise Extreme Caution when transiting this area, and report any unusual sightings/observations to UKMTO as soon as possible.

Description: On 04 JAN 2015 at 0601UTC in position 12 33.2N 043 25.6E. Master reported approached by 2 skiff on stbd bow to 1.2nm distant and 3 on prt side. Skiffs approached at high speed. Ship’s whistle and alarm sounded. Embarked AST showed weapons skiffs continued to approach. Skiffs continued to approach AST showed their weapons again, AST fired warning shots. Skiffs stopped their approach on MV at 1nm distant. 4-5 POB in skiffs wearing yellow coloured clothing. No ladders and no weapons seen. One skiff seen 1.5nm ahead of vessel AST showed weapons again skiff moved away to stbd. MV alerted Djibouti and ships in the area on VHF of this approach. MV is safe.

Description: On 03 JAN 2015 at 0840 UTC in position 12 57.7N 043 09.2E. Master reported being approached by 3 blue and white hull skiffs at 25kts on MVs port quater closing to 5 cables. Each skiff had 5/6 POB wearing yellow rain suits. AST showed weapons skiffs stopped their approach and fell behind. No weapons and no ladders seen. MV is safe.

Description: On 02 JAN 2015 at 0450 UTC in position 2337N 05910E. Master reported being approached by 2 white skiffs. 5 POB in one skiff and 3 POB in the second skiff. No weapons and no ladders seen. Skiff closed on vessel at 22kts from port side to within 5 cables. Vessel conducted manoevering and skiffs stopped their approached.

Description: On 01 JAN 2015 at 0936 UTC in position 12 06.7N 045 07.3E. Master reported being approached by 1 grey hulled and white decked skiff with 2 outboard engines. 5 POB in skiff all standing. No weapons and no ladders seen. Skiff closed on vessel at 20 kts from port bow to 0.5nm distance and maintained a parellel course for 30 mins. Vessel increased speed activated alarm and fire hoses and altered course to increase distance from skiffs. Vessel is safe.

Description: On 31 DEC 14 at 0525UTC, a vessel reported being approached by a white skiff in position 2039N 05940E. The skiff approached to within 1.0 NM. The security team fired flare towards the skiff and it turned away but stayed approximately 2.0 NM from the ship for 40 minutes. The skiff then moved away. No weapons or ladders were sighted. Vessel is safe.

Description: On 29 DEC at 1040UTC in POSN 1347N 05052E. Master reports being approached by a brown skiff to within 15-20 meters, at the rear of the vessel, travelling 6-8 knots. Skiffs followed the vessel for about half hour. AST fired 20 warning shots. Skiff ceased their approach. Unknown POB. Vessel is safe.

Description: On 23 DEC 0506UTC POSN 2222N 06046E. Master reports 2 crafts approaching his vessel at speeds of 24Knts. At 2nm the two vessels seperated to either side of the flanks. Master sounded the horn and VPT was stood to. The two crafts passed ahead of the vessel and then stopped in the water so that vessel would pass between them. Master altered course to keep the two craft on the Starboard side and maintain a CPA of 2nm. Craft then deviated away from the vessel and increased to 4nm. No information on craft, no weapons/tripwires sighted. Craft now clear and vessel is safe.

Description: On 20 DEC at 1100UTC in POSN 1256N 04313E and 1237N 04322E. Master reports being approached by 2 groups of white/blue/brown skiffs to within 0.5nm at high speeds. 1st group of 7 skiffs slowly approached to 0.5nm from both sides of the vessel, 2nd group of skiff approached at high speeds to within 0.5nm. AST showed weapons, ships horn sounded and skiffs ceased their approach. 5-6 POB each skiff, 2 outboard engines sighted on some skiffs. Vessel is safe.

Master reports being approached by 2 groups of skiffs to wihtin 5 cables speeds up to 22kts. 1st group of 4 yellow/blue hulled skiffs closed to 5 cables, AST showed weapons and skiffs turned away. 2nd group of 3 white/grey hulled skiffs closed to 8 cables, AST showed weapons and skiffs turned away. Skiffs had 6-8 POB. Ladders sighted on 1 skiffs. Vsl safe.

Description: On 15 DEC 0655UTC POSN 1233N 04354E. Master reports being approached by 1 blue skiff to within 0.6NM on stbd quarter at high speeds. AST showed weapons and skiffs stopped dead in the water and moved astern of the vsl and stopped their engine. AST showed weapons again and skiffs made full speed ahead northbound of Vsl. Skiff had yellow tarpaulin, 3 POB, weapons sighted. Vsl safe.

Description: On 04 Dec 14 at 1330 UTC in position 12 22 42N. 046 42.08E Master reported a brown Dhow towing three blue hulled skiffs at 1.2nm distance on MVs port side on a parallel course. The Dhow and three skiffs stayed on this parallel course for 30 mins. MV altered course and alerted other vessels on CH16 of this Dhow and skiffs. No weapons or ladders seen in Dhow and skiffs. The number of POB on these crafts could not be seen. MV is safe.

Description: At 291000ZNOV14, an MV reported being followed by suspicious vessel in POSN 1317N 04254E, described as being blue in colour. Subsequently the suspicious vessel followed for 15 mins. The master used evasive manoeuvres, and activated water hoses, alarm sound and security team mustered. The suspicious vessel was at a distance of 0.3nm when it then stopped following. No weapons or ladders spotted. AST on board, vessel and crew are SAFE.

Description: An MV reported being chased/followed by suspicious vessel off their starboard quarter at POSN 0425S 04615E. Initially the vessel was stopped with all lights switched off, described as being white in colour and had a small speed boat hanging on a crane. Subsequently the suspicious vessel followed for 15-20 minutes. The master used evasive manoeuvresuntil the suspicious vessel was at a distance of 7nm when it stopped following. AST on board, vessel and Crew are SAFE.

Description: On 24 Nov 14 at 1320UTC in posn 13 08.1N 043 04.0E. 8 white and blue hulled skiffs each with 4 POB closed on MV at 28-30kts. A ladder was sighted. MV activated fire hoses, carried out evasive manoeuvres and alerted other vessels in the vicinity on VHF. At 3 cables distance from the MV the skiffs turned away from the vessel. This approach lasted 20 minutes. Vessel is safe.

Description: On 24 Nov 14 @ 0525UTC in Psn 19 40.60N 064 42.94E a suspicious vessel was seen on radar at 5.7nm on port beam, no AIS identification was seen on radar. The suspicious vessel was next seen at 3.7nm astern. The suspicious vessel had a white hull with orange band unable to see how many POB, no weapons or ladders seen. The suspicious vessel followed the MV matching its speed for 45 mins. MV is safe.

To : All Ships Transiting Off Tioman Island – East Coast Of Peninsular Malaysia / South China Sea

On 28.08.2014 at 2040 LT at Position 03:24N – 104:04E, 30nm North of Tioman Island, Malaysia.

Pirates boarded a product tanker underway and hijacked it. They took hostage all crew members and locked them in the engine room. The pirates stole lub oil cargo and transferred to a barge. They released the vessel and escaped at 0400 LT on 29.08.2014.

Ships are advised to maintain strict anti-piracy watch and measures. Vessels are also advised to monitor the IMB PRC Satellite broadcast and warnings via INMARSAT C EGC SAFETY NET and report all attacks and suspicious sightings to local authorities and IMB Piracy Reporting Centre. The Centre will liaise with local authorities to provide necessary assistance.”

“The CENTCOOPNAV (French Navy) informs the presence of the vessel << GARE>> (supply vessel), suspected to act as a <> for pirates. This vessel left Warri, Nigeria on 16/03/2014 and seem presently to patrol in the area. Her last known position is 19/03/2014 05°44’N 004° 49’E. This vessel is suspected to have participated to the hijack of the M/T Kerala on 17/01 in Luanda, Angola. This vessel could be the M/V Gare, iMO 9121155, a tug boat registered in Germany. It is highly recommended to avoid this vessel and in case of detection, to report her position to the SSE Dept.”

“On 22 July at about 0100 hours, RHL Felicitas while in anchorage at Djibouti Port experienced a suspicious approach by a skiff with 6 personnel on-board to the vessel’s anchor chain area. Our Maritime Marshals on-duty spotted the skiff and activated Alert ‘Grey’. The skiff then moved to about 15 m to the vessel’s port side and our Maritime Marshals triggered the weapons’ laser aiming device at the skiff while the Master activated the vessel’s horn. The combined actions by the on-board Maritime Marshals and the crew caused the suspicious skiff to move away from the vessel.”
